元宵随想4 - 鱼生
Went to the Spore Student Society CNY celebration on sat. We had a big table of 鱼生 and the president of the SSS was explaining how 鱼生 came about. I think 70% of what he talked is rubbish. I shall try to set the record straight. This is what I remember from 联合早报:
鱼生 is a form of food is that very common in cantonese and teochew families. The cantonese like it sweet, the teochew like it sweet and sour. There is a famous stall in Spore Chinatown that sell good 鱼生 porridge.鱼生 was eaten now and then, no particular festival or season. Then along came 4 chefs, named 四大天王 by the Spore press as the 4 big names in Spore cantonese dishes. All very old now, 3 is dead i believe.
They came together n improve the 鱼生. 鱼生 + the chinese belief that the 7th day of the CNY is 人日and we eat a dish of 7 different colours veg = present 七彩发财鱼生。
The 4 big chefs promote their 鱼生 at their own restuarants, 红星,龙凤,冯良 + 1 more cant remember n it took the city by storm.
