闭门谢客

Was sick since last week, take the chance of this long weekend and forced myself to stay indoor. fri night, which was windly n chilling as i walked home, must have worsen my condition. These 3 days, the furthest i went is Tang front desk.

Boring place......

Sat summarize my 25 pages report to a 6 page summary, 2 pages of words, 4 pages of graphs. Sun spend whole day resting n start reading 云海玉弓缘. finished 52 chapters this morning.

Today, read an article recommend by Tony. This article is good, perfect, impressive. Written by Cuong (MH will know who he is), Karen (Tony ex-post doc, now back in Germany) and Tony, it summaize why n how reduced basis is carried out. Then it explain the most difficult part, how to obtain an accurate analysis of the error of the RB method. Fantastic article, which i got lost at the error estimate when the primal-dual error prediction start coming in. Then read the notes written by Tony on fri, 4 pages, hand written, simple n neat, but again i dont ustd much of it. Have to look for G again. If not for this illness, i will be in the lab bothering him, sianz...

3 days indoor, being eating 冰糖炖雪耳 for breakfast for 3 days, have to eat once more tmrw morning. smooth but plain, other than 冬菇焖鸡 w HM, the rest of the food is plain, plain, plain. I think my tongue is losing its taste bud already.

Home cooked food. The best thing to eat when u r sick or homesick. Had 雪耳 for breakfast today, lunch is plain rice + 冬菇焖鸡. Cooked a big bowl n HM very 赏脸 came over for lunch.

The chicken is fine, but the 冬菇 is not very good. Have to ask my mum for her secret recipe, no matter what i do or where i eat, her 冬菇 is the best and that taste cant be find anywhere in spore or usa. overall, the dish is just a pass, didnt cook it long enough, only 1 hr+ n dont have 砂锅. Although chinese believe that when u r coughing, u shldnt eat chicken, but there is the only easy meat i have, hack.

28+4 ways to know if u're chinese

1) You unwrap gifts very carefully, so you can save and reuse the wrapping (and especially those ribbons).

2) When there is a sale on toilet paper, you buy 100 rolls and store them in your closet or in the bedroom of an adult child who has move out.

Miss home

Feeling blue after dinner. First time having dinner at lab. coded like mad n finish a 19 pages report for tony. was thinking of emailing him n then go back for dinner. Then when i check my email, realise that tony had already email me at 2 pm, with more work to do. Stayed in the lab till 9 pm, doing more coding n lengthening the report to 25 pages. sianz...

Mood sort of turn worse while printing report when i realise that i am all alone in the lab, G, S, R, SM, DT, Y, T all left the lab already. When i left the lab, there was only 4 pple left.

Being sick since last weekend. Didnt realise the cause till SH mention abt the snow fight at ashdown. Then tue i rush down to westgate in t-shirt n shorts may have tigger the sore throat, cough n flu. G was kind to lend me his cough medicine.

Miss home where i can ask my dad for western medicine, where i ask my Dr ah ma for chinese medicine, where i can ask my mum for herbal tea....

Plus this afternoon saw my bro msn nick "miss u bro", suddenly all my thoughts are back home. My bro n I r not particularly close, we fight alot since young. But it is always good to know.

Drag the sick body back tang, where all my thoughts are back home. Thou of finding somebody to chat, but got condamm, sianz....

Still on Snow

That is Charles river frozen during last weekend snow storm. It is only partial frozen n turn back into water the next day.

Was chatting w Tony's post doc this afternoon, a nice guy from swiss and another ang mo phd student, from PROF HOSOI group. This ang mo is an interesting and handsome guy, but i think is attached. From France.

Anyway, he told me that last winter, Charles river was frozen from Nov to Feb, n again from late Mar to Apr. This winter, Charles river only froze for abt 5 days. The average temperature of this winter is slightly 6 oC higher than the past.

Maybe it is because of global warming. The Swiss guy reply, "no, not possible to occur in usa". "Yap, Bush rejected it", I replied.

元宵随想5 - Snow

Sun morning 3am+, it starts snowing, non-stop. This is not a good day to go out. Snow is predicted to be 10 inches deep or more. NY n Boston airport are closed. Public schools is out on mon.Charles river at one time was frozen.

Went over to JLJ place at 9+. Why? cos i cant stay in my aparment. After coming back from SH place after dinner, was surprise to see Andrew and his gf having a romatic dinner at the living room. Just feel uncomfortable staying in my room n listening to all their conversation. Today Andrew was already behaving unusual. First he ask if his classical music is too loud. Then he offer me coffee. I think if i did went downstairs for dinner w SH, he would have ask me to stay out for the night. 无事献殷情，必有所求

Had snow fight w JLJ, SW, MH and SD. It was fun, but freezing cos didnt bring gloves. All the nice patches of snow was destroyed by us. Snow was up to our knee n it is fun dragging our feets along the thick snow. Laying down on the snow was even shiok.

Not only was the snow heavy, the wind is strong too. Hence u will see snow blown into smooth slopes.

During the walk back home, was admiring the snow-covered campus, had 3 near-fall n 1 big fall. Landed on my left buttock and left palm. 乐极生悲．．．

元宵随想4 - 鱼生

Went to the Spore Student Society CNY celebration on sat. We had a big table of 鱼生 and the president of the SSS was explaining how 鱼生 came about. I think 70% of what he talked is rubbish. I shall try to set the record straight. This is what I remember from 联合早报:

鱼生 is a form of food is that very common in cantonese and teochew families. The cantonese like it sweet, the teochew like it sweet and sour. There is a famous stall in Spore Chinatown that sell good 鱼生 porridge.鱼生 was eaten now and then, no particular festival or season. Then along came 4 chefs, named 四大天王 by the Spore press as the 4 big names in Spore cantonese dishes. All very old now, 3 is dead i believe.

They came together n improve the 鱼生. 鱼生 + the chinese belief that the 7th day of the CNY is 人日and we eat a dish of 7 different colours veg = present 七彩发财鱼生。

The 4 big chefs promote their 鱼生 at their own restuarants, 红星，龙凤，冯良 + 1 more cant remember n it took the city by storm.

元宵随想3 - Flowers

That day was chatting w JLJ and JJ during the trip to Supper 88 and somehow flowers for the coming V day was mentioned. Cant remember what really happen, but i sort of promise to give flowers to JLJ.

Then some days later, was chatting w JLJ and somehow she convinced me to send flowers to all the gals in class. Shld check my msn history, but was too lazy. btw, the history is huge, JLJ told me that since yesterday, I have overtook HM n became her no 1 chat in msn. But she is still ranked 4th for my side (overtook SH last night), behind SW, JJ n MH, taking into account msn history from my dell notebook.

Anyway, I took the easy n cheap way out and gave them paper-made lilies. Learn that during VJ when junior need to give senior gifts during the graduation assembly (SC, YM n HM shld know). Google for steps to refresh memory. It is good for me too, since i took that chance to move away from matlab coding, but at the same time, still doing something systematic to keep my mind rational.

Remember that i had only gave flowers once before yesterday, excluding flowers for mothers' day. That time was in VJ, yr 2, to a gal which i cant remember her name n face now. VJ that time was under LPM, n an unwritten rule is "never touch her plants n flowers". I think i was feeling naughty that day, n the flowers were nice. Just plucked it off n gave it to her who so happen to be sitting beside me. She left VJ after the 1st 3 mths n got no news there after.

Who did i gave the paper lilies to? JLJ, SW n MH. Rules are simple, only those who are single got it. Not going to give to 有夫之妇, or else i will be in deep trouble. Hence, HS n YM dont have any. JLJ gave 2/3 of her flowers to HS thou, but none of my bussiness. Why JLJ n SW got? cos 将在外，君令有所不受． :P

Btw, these flowers was commented by SH n MH that paper flowers were meant for dead pple.

元宵随想2 - SSS

Went for the Spore Student Society CNY celebration last sat. wonder why they named it SSS, sound like Spore Secret Society.

There were abt 60+ sporeans, some w families along. Met a guy from my lab, which i had no idea he is a singaporean, cos he speak perfect english w his supvr. Then he start using the 3 L's, lah, lor, le and immediately his status was established.

The whole environment is just homely, Singlish is used commonly and we speak w broken chunks of english, chinese and sometimes hokkien. Singlish is the first thing we look for to identify our fellow singaporeans.

Notice that all pple is chinese, maybe it is cos this is a CNY celebration. Also, there is a high concentration of nerds inside the room :P

元宵随想1 - Food

Saw SW and MH blog on their blog. My mum commented that the fried chicken and potato look good, just wondering whatever they taste just as good. I replied that I dont know since i didnt taste it before. But I tried their dumpling before, not bad.

I have too decide to post some of my food here, the main purpose is to let my mum know that i am still eating well here. She is always complaining that I shld be willing to spend more money on food. My dad on the other hand is always complaining that I am not sleeping. Now that he got msn, he know what time i sleep due to the time difference b/w Spore n MIT.

This is best eaten in the morning, empty stomach, warm. Good for reducing heatness n complexion. So far, SW, MH, HM, SC n YM had tasted it. JLJ will be next. Anymore takers?


Pork ribs + seafood & veg noodles. far from my mum's cooking, but still ok.

Now when i am outside then i realise how good my mum cooking is. sianz....









this took me 3 hrs to make, chicken legs + peanuts soup. only got 70% of my mum taste, but reach 90% when JLJ add more salt.

JJ was complaining why he didnt have a chance to taste it. Here is the rule of getting invited: when the food is almost done. I will look for guest on msn. JLJ happened to be the only person online last sat at 12+. SC was also online, but is his moblie msn. 来得早，不如来得巧

In the end, I brought the whole pot over to Ashdown and JLJ, HS, SW, MH and myself ate it.

Last Friday before spring term starts

Expected a normal friday, but havent been doing alot of work on wed and thur. forced myself to wake up at 8 am n realise that alberto is already in the bathroom. Ok, this guy is different from the other 2 who wakes up late in the morning. Surprising his gf is not around.

Reach lab and saw George, he is finally back from the conference at France. Poor thing, 1st day back to lab n got bombarded by me about orthognormalization in reduced basis. He told me that because FEA is in the Hilbert space, the modified GS need to be further modified.

Walked over to Technology sq to buy lunch n meet JLJ, ended up having lunch w her n HS for close to 2 hr. JLJ out of the blue decide to change jacket w HS. wow, JLJ after wearing HS black coat, look stuning, 眼前一亮，惊为天人！If she made that offer wearing that, i wont say no. :P

went back lab n work on RB, coding was simple after i sorted out the various issue. But the results is very funny. then Tony came in at 4 pm, take a look at my results n commented: "2 cases, (a) need more basis vectors or (b) u have a bug.

Then he turn over to take to sugarta n i discover my bug, coded x = b\A instead of x = A\b. Suddenly, the results is super nice. Tony commented that "so, it is answer (b), a bug", so "ma lu". Then he told me to continue to 2 parameters for RB.

Went to a David Copperfield show this evening. Magic was nice, but the whole show is too short. Spend quite a while thinking how he did it. Then i gave up, either it is very simple or very tough. But it is not worth spending time thinking abt it, dont want to spolit the magic.

Note, i got a underground passage all the way from 77 mass ave to building E25, courtesy from george. the trick is, when u reach building 66 from building 56, u will see a painting of an old man. on the left, behind the paining, is a staircase down to the basement, the entrance to the underpass that lead all the way to builing E25. there are enough signs to lead the way. Dont get lost there cos it can be quite creedy walking alone underground at night.....

Came back, go to Ashdown for the Jungle party, free food and dancing lessons. Yes to food n no to dancing. The class was happily learning how to dance. I came out of the party n stroll around the lobby. Do u know that ashdown lobby used to be in the open-space? Ashdown used to be a hotel n the present lobby is the place where horse-carriages stop. (What i am going to type is going to be condemm by the class) that i was, strolling n thinking how to include 2 parameters into the RB......strolling n thinking, walking n thinking.....

N i got it, i think i got it, need to try it out tmrw. wow, got inspiration at ashdown.

ok, time to sleep. tmrw need to wash clothes, no more socks already. tmrw need to out w JLJ. tmrw need to code 2 parameters RB.... tmrw got free food....
